The Great War

World War I gave us fighter planes, chemical weapons, tanks, flame throwers, extensive submarine warfare, futile trench combat that accomplished nothing but 10 million deaths, the first Marxist government, the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires, the League of Nations, and the seeds that led to World War II.

It also gave us the American holiday of Veterans Day. It honors those who have served in the armed forces and is celebrated on the anniversary of the First World War’s ending, November 11, 1918.
